A QUICK CHAT WITH TRUE VIBENATION

This is a really interesting and fun number from you guys. How did you approach tracking this single? What was the spark of inspiration?

The track was written and recorded while we were on tour in Africa, so we were just pulling inspiration from our experiences there, the hustle of the city, the festival vibes and the amazing artists we met. That crazy guitar style (Sungura) you hear throughout the song is very typical to Zimbabwe and we wanted to take it and mix it with the electronic and hip-hop music we also grew up listening to in Australia. So basically, it pays homage to the past but still bangs!

You do so well to blend traditional Sungura music with modern Afrobeats. What does this genre mean to you? Where does the drive come from?

Every time I hear that whirring crazy guitar sound it takes me back to listening to my Mum’s old tapes as a kid and it’s just so hard to resist wanting to dance. (tip: Google Borrowdale dance) Music from Africa and the diaspora is blowing up at the moment and we want to bring our own sound to the table.

How did you find working with Sylent Nqo on this track?

Making this song was actually one of the funniest recording sessions we’ve ever had. I just remember laughing a lot in between takes and then watching Sylent Nqo absolutely shred the guitar parts. Then we wrote all the lyrics together on the spot and he shredded the vocal recording too! The guy is easily one of the most talented musicians we’ve worked with before, keep an eye out for him!

Where can we see True Vibenation in 2020?

We’ll be touring across the country on our Australian Headline Tour before we head over to UK/Europe for the summer. We generally try to turn the dance floor into a sweaty heaving frenzy of limbs, so if that’s your vibe, come and join us!
