A Quick Chat With Woody Pitney

Congratulations on your release! What are your plans to celebrate now that it is out?

To celebrate, I’m playing shows in Melbourne, at the Leadbeater on June 17th, and Sydney at The Chippo on July 22nd. It’s going to be the first time I’ve played with my full six-piece band in Sydney for nine years, I cannot wait!

How do you feel ‘End Of The Day’ differs from your previous releases?

'End of the Day’ is a really firm step in the country music sphere. With previous releases, there’s always been country elements, but they have been a little folk leaning. Something that really allowed me to achieve this country sound was enlisting the help of Nashville-based producer Austin Moorhead, who really helped me bring the dream to life.

You’ve played to some incredible crowds! What is your most notable experience to date?

Playing to a crowd of 10,000+ at Obstwiesenfestival in Germany definitely has to be up there. It was at a time when my song ‘You Can Stay’ was popular over there and I was given a headline slot at this festival. Having that many people sing my song back to me was a totally surreal and out-of-body experience. I also loved playing at Wanderland Music Festival in The Philippines - that was another experience that I will never forget.

What can fans that haven’t seen you live, expect from your live set?

A lot of energy! I really like to engage the crowd as much as possible, with a lot of collaboratives singing along between the audience and myself. I also like to get down into the crowd.

How do you tend to get inspired when creating new music?

I tend to start by playing around with chord structures on my acoustic guitar and adding vocal melodies over the top. I always have my voice memos handy on my iPhone to try and capture any ideas on the fly… most of those recordings are absolute trash, but every so often something sticks out and I progress to develop that song even more.

What can we expect to see from you this year?

I’m in the early stages of planning a European tour for later in the year. I’m really looking forward to getting back over there to play for this first time since before the pandemic hit. I also have more new music to release and more Aussie shows to announce, so stay tuned!
