GET TO KNOW CADENCE

Hey Cadence, thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Congratulations on your debut release. Talk us through some of the processes that you had writing your new single Unbreakup.

Thank you so much! The main idea for ‘Unbreakup’ was written pretty late one night, right after a pretty rough breakup I had. I sent that concept to Emily the next morning, and after a few days she sent me an amazing demo! We went back and forth on little lyrical details, but that demo essentially made up the vocal as it is today! Em is such an amazing songwriter, so I was really excited to work with her! In reality, ‘Unbreakup’ was the result of countless abandoned ideas and demos of mine, even though it  feels like it came together pretty quickly!

We understand you’re working hard on bringing a live show to us (when we are free of restrictions!) Has the isolation time helped you in developing new ideas for this show?

Absolutely! This time in isolation has really been a blessing in disguise. It’s given me time to focus on my music more than ever before, and to take Cadence in the direction I want to go! In terms of the live show, I have been working incredibly hard with my team to put together something new, exciting and unique to Cadence! It’s been challenging to juggle so many elements whilst trying to keep a nice flow, but it’s coming together really nicely! Coming from a background of ‘traditional’ DJing, I am loving the opportunity to finally incorporate live instruments into my shows, something I have been wanting to do for a while!

Unbreakup is deeply rooted in electronic music. Who are some of your musical inspirations?

My inspiration comes from a whole range of different artists and genres! I love Hayden James’ live show and am a huge fan of his music but,  in terms of production, my biggest inspiration is Cassian. He has an unbelievable amount of talent and, in my opinion, can do no wrong. I also love what Shallou has been putting out recently, and am taking a lot of inspiration from his production and songwriting!

What is something that you want people to know about the Cadence project?

I think the way that the project got started is pretty unique! I’d been experimenting with changing genres and making that dance-pop style, but really didn’t have much motivation, as there were so many things going on in my life! While I was in Europe with a few of my best friends, I got a random DM from a guy in LA called Griffen. We jumped on a FaceTime call while I was in Germany and he inspired me to create something new, to start from scratch. That was the start of the journey, but it took hundreds of tracks and ideas, as well as harsh feedback from the people around me, to craft the Cadence sound. ‘Unbreakup’ is the first track I have been completely happy with, so it’s exciting to finally get to share it. I really feel for Daz and Alee, who have been with me since Cadence was born, because I’ve forced them to listen to every version of every song I’ve made...

What is next on the horizon for you?

I’ve got so many exciting things coming up! As we mentioned before, hopefully restrictions are lifted soon and playing some shows will become reality again, but for now I am so focussed on my music! I’ve got a really cool record coming out fairly soon, which is a collaboration with Benji from the Slenderbodies. We were put in touch earlier this year and we’ve written something we’re both super proud of! He’s such an amazing artist and an incredible guy to work with! I probably shouldn’t give away too much about what’s coming after that, but I can say I’m lucky enough to be working with some crazy talented people both from Australia and in the US, and I can’t wait to get this music out!
