MAY LYN Releases third single, ‘Soldiers’ Off her upcoming EP Vessel

Speech and propaganda are powerful tools of expression and persuasion, especially when they are used in the appropriate context. Modern day governance has been employing these tools for centuries, creating divide and dissension among citizens of different cultures and origins. Today, May Lyn responds to this issue through her latest single, ‘Soldiers’.

Freedom, power, and oppression – ‘Soldiers’ addresses the ideology of nationalism and how it has the ability to create cultural separation among societies. Sharing from her experience of being brought up in Malaysia, here’s what May Lyn has to share about ‘Soldiers’:

"Soldiers is a song about freedom of speech, authority, violence and oppression. I was thinking about the politically corrupt state of Malaysia and how freedom of speech is constantly being censored or criminalised. I think having the freedom to speak up against unjust practices is a basic human right and can contribute towards equality and peace. In comparison, Australia has it pretty good but some countries are more heavily oppressed than others, so I wanted to write a song that brings awareness to that."

May Lyn's debut single off this EP, 'Escape' has received support from community radio stations, triple j, Purple Sneakers, and Ripe. She reached #11 on 4ZZZ's Top 20 chart and ‘Escape’ was recently added to Filtr’s ‘Stay Sharp’ Spotify playlist. In April 2017, May Lyn was selected as a winner for triple j Unearthed’s NIDA competition. She will be filming a music video for this single that will be premiered on rage in September 2017.
