Meet Cinnamon Sun.
Cinnamon Sun is a newly formed, conscious soul / roots band based out of Melbourne, Australia. The group is a collaborative effort of some of Victoria’s finest artists. Fronted by Davy Simony, Jimmy Harwood, Chaddy B, Harrison Brown and Hugo Lee, all members of the band interchange between guitars, keyboards, percussion, saxophone and vocals to create a revolving door of surprises.
We sat down with Davy Simony to chat about the inspiration behind the project, 2021 plans for Cinnamon Sun and debut single If You Call.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us Davy. Firstly, how does it feel to have the first single from Cinnamon Sun out in the world?
Thanks for having me! Honestly, it feels amazing. So many people have put so much time into the creation and release of this song. We are all ecstatic to share the first taste of ‘Cinnamon Sun’! This little nibble is just the start- we have many mouthfuls coming soon and we can’t wait to share them! 🍽
What was the inspiration behind the formation of Cinnamon Sun?
A shared love of music and a passion for creating songs with a positive message. The project formed quite naturally; we were all collaborating on different tunes and creating lots of cool stuff within this new sound. We quickly realised our passion & love for these songs surpassed all the other projects we were working on, so we decided to take the next step. We got married (well the musical equivalence of this) 💒
With each band member interchanging between instruments, you all must be extremely musically gifted. Do you have a preferred instrument and is there a story that you’d like to share about when you first learnt music?
Personally, I love playing keys! Even though I mostly play guitar in live settings, I have written a lot of the keys lines on this album and really enjoy playing them. It’s funny, the first instrument I started learning was piano. I was 8 when I started and I remember the reason I signed up for lessons was because a girl I had a crush on told me about her private piano lessons. Unfortunately at the time, I didn’t know what ‘private’ meant.. I said “sweet, I’ll see you there” and obviously I didn’t.. But I am so grateful to that moment- I did lessons and exams for the next 10 years, and to this day, it’s still one of my favourite instruments 🎹
Who are your musical influences and why? Do you have a story about the best performance that you’ve seen live?
Some of my biggest influences are: Dope Lemon, Jordan Rakei & Fat Freddy’s drop. Beautiful songwriting, great grooves and strong emotion. I love the obscure happy/sad feeling that you get from some of Dope Lemon and Jordan Rakei’s songs. Joyous but sorrowful. Sad yet hopeful. That’s the best way I can describe it..anyway there is something special about that feeling.
The best live performance I’ve ever seen was ‘Fat Freddy’s Drop’ live at ‘The Forum’ (Melbourne) in 2013. The horns, the grooves, the dancing trombonist in nothing but underwear! I love their uplifting songs that make you dance and give you a feeling of connectedness. I remember looking around at everyone else dancing with big smiles on their faces and thinking; everyone here is an absolute bloody legend. 🎺
What is the plan for 2021? Are you going on tour? Do you have more singles on the horizon? Let us know what you and the band have got going on.
