PLAYLIST OF TRACKS THAT INSPIRED ‘THE ADVENTURES OF E-WAN’
1. Hockey Dad - Stalker
The surfer punk rock genre has always been appealing to us and listening to Hockey
Dads Stalker influenced songs TwoBrains and No Money. The way Hockey Dad creates
the balance in their songs to be groovy and punchy while also being melodic are ideas
that we wanted to recreate when writing our own songs.
2. Shihad - My Mind's Sedate
New Zealand’s greatest rock band it's no wonder we love these guys, My Mind’s Sedate
is packed with hard hitting drums and gritty guitar tones that we took inspiration
throughout our album. Type A in particular shows off these features for both song
structure and textural ideas.
3. Gromz - Running Around
Though these local legends were surf rock/pop, they played a huge influence in the
Dunedin music scene in 2016/2017 when we began jamming together. They gave young
punters like us a kick up the backside to give the scene a red hot crack, and we’re pretty
stoked with where Hot Donnas has taken us!
4. Nirvana - Serve the Servants
Nirvana has always been a band that we have always listened to since the young days.
Serve the Servants is quite a light track for nirvana but still keeps the essence of the
fundamentals of the band which can be said the same for our song Miss Season.
5. Foo Fighters - My Poor Brain
The Foo Fighters have always been a staple rock band that bridges the gap between
rock and popular music that undertook our influence when working on the album. The
track ‘My Poor Brain’ is a perfect example in how we try to blend melody and heavy rock
n roll riffs into our music.
6. Turnstile - Real Thing
The energy that these guys bring to their music and performances is second to none,
and it shows in their song ‘Real Thing’.There’s nothing more we love seeing than a
crowd full of people getting right amongst it, and we bring this energy especially in our
track ‘Two Brains’.
7. Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name
As a band, this song is up there with our all time favourites. We even love it so much that
we began covering it not long after we formed in 2017. There’s no track in particular that
was influenced by this song/band, but rather the EP as a whole. Nothing more
empowering than screaming “F*ck you I won’t do what you tell me!!” at the top of your
Lungs.
8. Arctic Monkeys - Old Yellow Bricks
The way Alex Turner uses his phrases and metaphors has always been an influence
lyrically which can be heard over our album. Old Yellow Bricks is an alternative song that
builds intensity over the course of the song, We like to take that effect and use it for our
own song making.
9. Tool - Jambi
Bass doesn't always have to be low and grumbling in Jambi parts of the bass is played
in a higher register with effects. This has influenced songs TwoBrains and Tube Socks
when the bass uses these ideas during the breakdown parts. Tool is also known for mixing and playing in different time signatures. We took playing in different time
signatures and infused it with our music which can be heard during Tube Socks.
10. Nirvana - Breed
As soon as Kurt Cobain's heavy guitar tone bleeds your ear drums, you can tell that this
is easily one of Nirvana’s heavier tracks. A prime example of simple yet effective, Grohl’s
drumming style has had massive influence on our sound as you can hear in Type A, Two
Brains, and No Money.
