Today, monthly music series Red Bull Sound Select reveals its next Sydney event, with a lineup programmed by I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah. On June 30, Red Bull Sound Select will head to Chippendale’s newly refurbished, and soon to be re-opened landmark, the Lansdowne Hotel. For the year’s sixth Sydney instalment, revered Melbourne punk-rock act The Peep Tempel, local love child of 50s guitar pop, Sloan Peterson, and krautrock wonders, MEZKO, will welcome in the weekend from one of Sydney’s most historic live music venues.

For over 90 years, the Lansdowne Hotel has hosted the up-and-coming names and Sydney faces of tomorrow with almost daily events. Having closed for refurbishments back in 2015, Red Bull Sound Select finds a perfect home at the Lansdowne Hotel this June. The lineup includes two of the city’s most exciting new artists performing at one of the venue’s first events since reopening.

Headlining the evening are Australian Music Prize and AIR Award nominated act, The Peep Tempel. This month, the Melbourne trio make their way north for their Red Bull Sound Select debut, having earned a live reputation as one of Australia’s most respected and powerful bands. The Peep Tempel’s recent third album Joy saw the group tour the country to rave reviews, with the band set to appear at Splendour in the Grass later next month, bringing along their pounding, off-kilter guitar sounds and rhythm sections.

Sydney’s 24-year-old Joannah Jackson aka Sloan Peterson joins The Peep Tempel with her 50s flavoured garage rock adding resounding warmth to the night. Having forged her taste for music while growing up on Sydney’s South Coast, Jackson’s infatuation with Elvis, Wanda Jackson and Nancy Sinatra has carried through to her creation of Sloan Peterson and is heard in most recent single, “105”.

MEZKO, founded by Sydney-based multi-instrumentalists Kat Harley and Laura Bailey, round out the evening’s solid lineup. Their rock-meets-electronica aesthetic and meld of krautrock, synthesisers and hypnotic vocals have paved a path for their memorable live shows and well-received singles. Ahead of Red Bull Sound Select, the duo have supported the likes of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Slum Sociable.

In turn with Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko and FBi Radio’s Amelia Jenner, Ponniah is one of Red Bull Sound Select’s key curators, supporting and nurturing live music discovery by pairing local established artists with breaking talent across the year’s designated events. Last week, Red Bull Sound Select revealed it will now also visit Melbourne from June onwards with lineups programmed by Chapter Music, Laneway Festival and I OH YOU.
