Review: Damien Rice - Palais Theatre - Melbourne

Damien Rice’s performance at the Palais Theatre last night was nothing short of extraordinary, proving once again why his live shows are so revered. After 20 years of cherishing his debut album O, hearing those songs live was worth the wait.

The show began with a striking visual—Damien kneeling on stage under a solitary spotlight. From that moment, the connection with the audience was undeniable. Reflecting on his last Australian tour, where he admitted he didn’t engage much, Damien more than redeemed himself, offering a performance that was equal parts concert, comedy and even part commentary on the Australian Open.

A standout moment was Back to Her Man, where Damien transformed the crowd into a choir, leading a powerful and moving singalong. With no setlist, the show felt deeply personal as he took requests from the audience, starting with Coconut Skins and weaving a unique and unpredictable journey through his discography.

Damien shared captivating stories, including his time opening for Leonard Cohen in Dublin, which led into a soulful cover of Famous Blue Raincoat. The emotional depth he brought to Cohen’s lyrics was unforgettable.

Francisca, his exceptional singer-cellist, added another layer of magic to the night, shining on tracks like 9 CrimesDelicate, and The Blower’s Daughter. Her hauntingly beautiful contributions enriched the evening’s performances.

The finale was an unforgettable mix of Cold Water, a moving rendition of Hallelujah and an invitation for the crowd to stand and move closer to the stage, creating an electric and intimate atmosphere. Though Cannonball was absent, it left the promise of more to come on his next visit.

Damien started the show on his knees, but by the end, the crowd was on their feet, giving him the ovation he truly deserved.
