REVIEW: THE INTERNET - ENMORE THEATRE, SYDNEY

The Internet’ provided a show as unique as it was outstanding. As they entered the stage, the Sydney all ages crowd reacted in a combination of awe and anticipation for a multitude of great songs from 5 extremely talented individual artists. The iconic kick drum at the beginning their hit song, “Under Control” began and the tone for the show was well and truly set. Soulful basslines, dreamlike guitar chords, raging sing alongs and Syd’s well developed vocals were all hallmarks of the overall performance, captured perfectly by the opening track.
The set list was unlike any other bands, as it gave each of the Internet’s talented members a moment in the spotlight. With every artist within the band having released, or releasing an album in the near future, they each performed mini sets of their own original material. Littered between these sets were the much loved tracks from the extremely well received, and commercially successful Ego Death.
Steve Lacy performed his heartthrob hits “Some”, “Ryd” and “Dark Red” in combination with nearly every girl in the theatres screams. Steve’s vocals were on point, and his iPhone mixed and produced tracks translated surprisingly well on the theatre stage. Matt’s groovy tunes added a unique energy to the crowd, with his funk/disco tracks sending a groove through the crowd. “Dent Jusay” and “Diamond In The Rough” were extremely well received by the punters. Syd’s personal “Insecurities” added intimacy to the set, while being juxtaposed by the energy filled, R&B “Know”.
The highlights of the night were the tracks performed from Ego Death. These records were at their peak in the concert setting. While the individual performances of the members were outstanding, the band tracks really highlights the amazing songwriting capabilities of the group as a whole, and really underlines the importance of each member to the amazing collective of artists that is, “The Internet”. Get Away’s punctual bass-line sent the crowd into mayhem, while “Just Sayin” created one of the strongest crowd and artist interactions I have witnessed at a concert. I was pleasantly surprised by Syd’s amazing vocal capabilities. Her ability to go from low key spoken vocals to amazing high notes was grand and amazingly impressive. A 5 piece band, live can sometimes get messy audio wise, however, the sound was crisp with the vocal not overpowered by all the strong instrumental performances.
The Internet’s extremely unique set list style was a risk that well and truly payed off. It flowed perfectly from artist to artist and band track to band track. Every performance was immaculate, and provided for an overall flawless experience.
