THE INSPIRATION BEHIND CASSIAN'S DEBUT ALBUM ‘LAPS’

Congratulations on the new album ‘LAPS’. It’s awesome! Where did the inspiration for this project come from?

Thank you! I had known I wanted to do an album for a while but once I figured out the the story I wanted to tell that’s when it really started to take shape.

‘LAPS’ is your debut album. How does this work differ from your previous work?
Does it hold a more significant meaning to you?

From when I first committed to making the album, everything changed. This feels like the start of my project as an artist.

Talk us through how you create your music. Is there a certain process you take on?

It’s almost always different. But everything is very musically driven. Every idea starts on the piano or a very simple synth sound.

How did you get into the music industry? Tell us about your music background and how you got here.

It’s a long story! I played guitar in a band that had shows around Sydney when I was 15/16. That turned into me DJing as soon as I turned 18. I played keys in another band that toured Australia, played festivals & had TV appearances when I was 19. I starting mixing & producing for other artist a few years after that. Had the chance to tour the world as a DJ around the same time which was really eye opening. I spent the last few years trying to get better as a producer & figure out what I want to say & how I want to sound as an artist.

Tell us about Rose Avenue Records. How is it working so closely with such cool people?

For me it’s such a natural extension of my relationship with those guys. I did a remix for Rufus Du Sol in 2012 and started mixing their records right after that. Since then I’ve been on tour with them around Australia & the USA and kept mixing their music. They’ve become some of my closest friends over the years and watching them evolve over the years has been a huge influence on finding my path as an artist.

We know you love music and that you’ve got a clear talent and passion for what you create. What else is there about you that we might not already know? (Hobbies, interests)

I work on a lot of music for other Artists. Hayden James, Running Touch, Presets & Golden Features, Rufus Du Sol, Set Mo, Graace, Lastlings, What So Not. I’m also on a never ending tour of health.

The power of this global pandemic has definitely impacted the music industry. How have you been going throughout it all? How did you keep busy during isolation?

My days haven’t changed too much. Instead of going to the gym I just exercise at home or around my neighbourhood. I’m normally in the studio alone every day. I had some really exciting shows lined up this year but this is the longest I’ve spent in one place for about 10 years so I’m trying to enjoy that.

LA is such a cool and cultural place to create music, tell us more about it. How has your music career been since moving there? Has it changed the way you write music?

It’s had a huge impact. The best artists, writers, producers, mixers are all here or frequently visiting. The bar is high, being here has definitely pushed me to push myself to be better. I met my manager after I moved here, she’s had such a massive positive impact on everything I do.

This album is incredible. We can’t wait for your next pieces of work. What can we look forward to seeing from you moving forward?

Thank you so much! I’m working on a few remixes for some of my favourite artists that’ll come out throughout the rest of the year. A few collabs with some of my friends. Lots & lots of new music.
