Timberwolf shares new single "Íkaros", the title track from his forthcoming debut album
Rising Adelaide singer/songwriter Timberwolf is thrilled to announce his new single titled “Íkaros”. Premiering last night on triple j's Good Nights, “Íkaros” is the title track from his highly anticipated debut album, set for release later this year.
"Íkaros" introduces a new side to the multi-instrumentalist Timberwolf (Chris Panousakis). While previous cuts “Hold You Up” and “Washed Out” brood deep with their emotive tempos and raw character, "Íkaros" features a crisp and buoyant melody with a charming guitar to launch us in. Hooked from the very first chord, Panousakis perpetrates an inspiring arrangement; while dreamy 60s chord progressions and a heavy drumbeat take lead, it’s Panousakis' hazy, understated vocals that are the true heroes of the track - making it one of Timberwolf's finest releases.
"This song to me represents the ethos and subtext of the whole forthcoming record, and follows the journey of this one character – Íkaros (a character re-interpreted from ancient Greek mythology) - from a life of self-preservation and fear of connection, to embracing vulnerability and trust in new connections with fellow humans, especially in romance" - Panousakis
It's been an incredible year for Panouskis. While last summer’s “Washed Out” has continued to flood airwaves, his recent single "Hold You Up" followed closely, infecting tastemaker blogs and triple j while magnifying Timberwolf's true spirit in a live setting. Along with his own headline shows, Timberwolf was handpicked to support triple j’s Hottest 100 #2 Amy Shark on her sold-out national tour.
Since releasing his Flux EP in 2015, Timberwolf has performed to sold out crowds across the country at Groovin The Moo, WOMADelaide, Big Pineapple and Woodford Folk Festival, as well as taking out Best Songwriter and Best Male Artist at the South Australian Music Awards. 2016's "Something That I Said" premiered on Stereogum, was added to rotation on radio nationwide as well as led to his signing with US publisher Third Side Music and as a result, his forthcoming debut album was partly recorded in the States. Panousakis also signed to prestigious Australian booking agency Select Music in the same year, joining acts like Midnight Juggernauts, Kirin J Callinan and RÜFÜS.
Having just wrapped three headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and his hometown of Adelaide, Timberwolf has finally completed works on his debut album set for release later this year. In the meantime, get acquainted with "Íkaros" and see why Timberwolf is one of this year’s most talked about acts.
“Though he may be exploring a new sound, he exudes a comfort and confidence that hints at the album being something special” - Stereogum
"There's a lot of talk about this young Adelaide-based artist, and with good reason - his lyrics are poignant, his music captivating, his motives pure" - Rolling Stone
