1. Hey Curly Blonde, love the new track, why don’t you tell us a little about the band?

Hey, thanks heaps! Yeah we’re Curly Blonde. We’re a duo made up of best mates Brynn O’Connor and Fergus Selkirk-Bell, based in Melbourne, Victoria. We met each other when we both moved here for uni, and have been jamming and making music ever since.

2. How would you describe your music?

We’re all about good vibes and easy listening, and we think that really describes our music well. We definitely have that indie rock/pop sound, but love exploring and experimental different sounds and instruments to try and create some catchy bangers. ‘Room 309’ really explores our love of guitars and upbeat vibes, but we think our upcoming EP shows a variety in sounds that we love.

3. Tell us about Room 309, what’s the story of this track (Where was it recorded etc.)?

Yeah Room 309 is actually one of our oldest tracks so it’s awesome to have it released! Brynn came up with the idea for it whilst playing around with the chord progression in his university college room about 3 years ago. The classic “what am I doing with my life?” thoughts really guide the lyrics through the idea of someone having such high aspirations and goals growing up, yet are extremely unsatisfied with how things are turning out. We think the song really captures the moment where you either decide to make a move to live those dreams, or whether you fall into the masses and go through the motions. Living in Melbourne, we’ve obviously been hit with the lockdown so this one was recorded in our home studio, which was a really fun experience. It was then mixed by Nicolas Mendoza and mastered by Tahlia-Rose Coleman, who are awesome people and really gave this track its full good-vibe sound!

4. Who are your greatest music influences?

We think as a band, artists like Ball Park Music and The Jungle Giants really set the standard for us and are pure goals in terms of the sounds they create and what they offer to their fans. Their live sets are off the charts!

Ferg: Individually, I can’t go past The Beatles and Queen. Pretty old-school but jeez they did well for themselves!

Brynn: I’d probably have to go with Tame Impala. I’ve never heard that man make a bad song!

5. Which local and international artist would you most like to support on an Australian tour?

Local artist, we’d have to go with Tame Impala. And international, definitely Glass Animals. What a couple of wild tours that’d be!

6. Have you any quirky band rituals?

This one’s more an individual ritual rather than a band, but everytime Brynn wants to record things and create new ideas he has a shower. He finds the shower the perfect spot to spark ideas and get the creative and musical juices flowing.

7. In one sentence, how would you sum up your 2020?

You win some and you lose some.

8. Have you got any secret hobbies we might be surprised by?

Our pride and joy is our backyard at our house in Melbourne. We’re out there everyday checking the herbs and veggies, watering the sunflowers, weeding, mowing the grass and getting the pitch perfect for backyard cricket. We live together so you’ll often see us both stand at the back door, hands on hips, and look out over the backyard like two proud suburban dads!

9. Which song do you wish you wrote and why?

Ferg: While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles- George Harrison really did it all for me in this song and it still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Especially that solo. I might need a minute here. Feeling a little flustered.

Brynn: Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin- For me it’s such a timeless song that was pretty much the first of its kind. So iconic!

10. What’s next for Curly Blonde?

Our debut EP! It’s out on November 25th and boy oh boy we’re keen to release it! Apart from that we’ve got so many ideas for more stuff, so plenty of recording and creating is definitely a lock in and hopefully some new music out soon after. Obviously pending things opening up here in Melbs we’ll be definitely catching up for lost time with mates and hopefully playing some live shows soon as well.
