What is the 'thinking chair' you refer to in the new track?

The thinking chair is a school chair I bought at the Paddington Antique Centre. It was used as a ‘time out’ chair for my son but mostly ended up being a time out chair for myself.

"How To Be A Human" is written from an objective point of view, is this the case for most Smallest Horse songs or do they come from your  personal lives?

Definitely personal life. We are pretty simple in many ways. We just sing about what we see.

What are three artists that have influenced Smallest Horse's sound?

Kimya Dawson for her ability to put so much heart into the simplest of songs, Jimmy Eat World for their inspiring harmonies and wholesomeness, and The Pretty Littles for their ability to inject so much energy into everything.

How has started having families influenced your songwriting?

It’s a heavy influence. Kids have great insight. You can have a bad day and think you have more than your fair share of problems but it all gets put in perspective when you spend time with a child. They see the world differently. They help you to realise what’s important. We try to write about what’s important.

How did you name the band?

Our name is inspired by Li’l Sebastian, the mini horse in the tv show Parks and Recreation.

What instructions would you give an alien on how to be a human?

We’d let the alien know that just because some of us look, sound, think, and believe different things - it’s really not a big deal. And we’d let this alien know that some humans haven't quite worked that out yet, so just to do your best and be the change you want to see in your new world. And we’d ask the alien if they’ve heard ‘Aliens Exist’ from Blink 182’s 1999 album ‘Enema of the State’.

Best hangover food?

Wings, a can of coke, panodol

You have your launch show coming up at Black Bear Lodge on 4th December, what's Smallest Horse's favourite song to cover?

The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton by The Mountain Goats. It’s quite nice to sing/yell ‘hail satan’ over and over.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Dancing and singing the Time Warp from Rocky Horror, circa 5 years old. ‘Put your hands on your hips’ etc. It’s still kinda my mantra tbh.

Best gig you've been to?

Anything post-lockdown. Live music is incredible and we are in a window of really appreciating it right now.

Who's your favourite Australian artist at the moment?

Tiny Little Houses.

What are Smallest Horse's plans for the next 6 months?

It’s a tough one to make too many grand plans at the minute. We’re just going to keep on keeping on and will keep making music. Making music helps us to make sense of the world.
