Frank James Talks His New Single

Frank James is an indie-folk/ rock artist living in Melbourne who also dabbles in soul and RnB. Today, he has just released his first new single in over a year.

'Friday' is a new direction for Frank James as he makes use of layers of volume-swelling electric guitars coated in big-room reverb and tremolo - all of which exude his mellow persona. This is all topped off by super smooth island-vibing melody that flows over the cool groove. We had a chat with Frank James to find out more.

Congrats on the release of 'Friday' Frank, can you tell us what this new track is about?

Cheers! Friday is about going out and partying too much. I was sitting blurry-eyed one morning after a big night out with a sore head and an empty bank account and the song just kinda fell out of me. I guess it was a realisation that I was unhappy with the lifestyle I was living at the time.

Compared to your previous releases, this is a bit of a change of pace and direction for you. Was it natural for you to incorporate the psych-rock electric guitar sounds and a live band to your music?

I think it was a natural progression, yes. I've always wanted to add more to my songs and to play with other musicians but hadn't had the opportunity to. I have to credit Dan Frizza (producer) with the particular direction we went in sonically. When I brought the song to him it was more of an upbeat acoustic diddy, but he really transformed it into something I'm very proud to put out into the world.

Have there been any key artists who you've been loving that has influenced this change?

I couldn't point out any artist in particular but I know I was listening to a lot of Australian artists and bands at the time so naturally that energy and sound rubbed off on me.

Is this new sound something fans should expect more of with future releases?

Definitely! I teamed up with Dan and some friends on an EP that I plan to release in in 2021

Now that Melbourne is opening up, what are some of the things you are most excited to do?

I just can't wait to play some shows! I've missed it so much and have written a bunch of new songs that I'd like to perform and record too. It's kind of funny though 'Friday' is all about the monotony of going out and drinking too much but I wouldn't mind a bit of that after 2020.

As 2020 is coming to a close, can we expect to see you releasing more music in early 2021?

Yeah for sure I have this EP recorded and ready to go that I will roll out in the new year.
