What’s next for William Crighton?

Tell us about the influence behind your new song, ‘Your Country’.

"Your Country" comes from a place of unity. We all live on this beautiful and nourishing country and each of us have our own personal relationship with the planet as well as an obligation to help protect the eco system for future generations. There are people within multinational corporations who's only drive is profit and our current leaders still place their interest and "The Economy" as a much higher priority than the land and future well-being of humanity.
The truth is we all know that without a healthy environment not only will the economy tank but humanity will too. I have two kids and It's on my mind all of the time - it's hard to fathom the level of greed that is putting all of us at stake.

Why is it an important message?

We only have one home. There is a lot of divisive distraction out there at the moment working to have us squabbling amongst ourselves while the Earth is plundered and the environment trashed. I wanted to put out this song to help remind people and to join the chorus of people who are saying that "we are one here and no matter who you are you need clean water, clean air and clean food."

We have to push back against the destruction and embrace collectively the age old truth that we do not own this land, this land owns us. We belong to it and have to work with it in order to flourish.  It's easy and mostly appropriate to point the finger at big corporations and government because they are the ones leading the destruction but you know we've all contributed to that destruction by letting them have power and buying into a system that rewards destructive behaviour. Ultimately the community has the power. If we can unite, be dedicated, well informed, bold and kind then we can turn this around. Main focus right now is stopping the CSG in the Pilliga.

You worked with ARIA Award winner William Barton on this track. What was it like working with him? Have you ever collaborated in the past?

It's always a wonderful experience working with William. I consider him a brother. We've known each other a couple of years now and he always bring so much to the music and I learn a lot from him. We've done some touring abroad and here in Australia together but this is the first time we've recorded together.

What’s the biggest lesson that this time (during covid) has taught you?

More of a reminder to enjoy and focus on the simple things. Spending quality time with family, Growing flowers and a veggie garden, spending more time in the bush, down the river or at the beach - remembering to not take moments for granted.

You’re playing some shows later this month, are you excited to get back onto the stage and perform live?

Yes, I can't wait. I've got a bunch of new songs to share.

What’s next for you, is there more music on the way in 2020?

Yes, more music is definitely on the way!!
