Monthly music series Red Bull Sound Select reveals its next Sydney and Melbourne events, programmed by FBi Radio’s Amelia Jenner in Sydney and Chapter Music in Melbourne. On August 25, FBi Radio curates the eighth 2017 Sydney instalment, seeing Wollongong’s experimental pop champions Shining Bird headline Marrickville’s Red Rattler with post-punk quartet Mere Women and sensual solo act Post Motel in support. The following week on August 31, Red Bull Sound Select heads to Melbourne’s belovedToff with hometown heat beat crew NO ZU headlining the night, supported by body rolling bass act Various Asses and cerebral electronic composer Corin.

Red Bull Sound Select Sydney

FBi Radio’s Amelia Jenner selects acts that show belonging and connection to natural environments within their work. All three acts focus on light, darkness and space in their work's physicality and feeling. Shining Bird and Mere Women especially draw attention to the Australian bush for its beauty and mystery - bringing an undeniably Australian flavour to their unique sounds.

Shining Bird bring their experimental pop from idyllic Austinmer to Marrickville’s Red Rattler Theatreas Sydney’s headline act. The band won Album & Song of the Year at the 2016 FBi SMAC Awards for their sophomore Black Opal LP and lead single “Rivermouth”. Written in the heart of the Blue Mountains, “Rivermouth” exudes Australian bush and coastal imagery, gleaning new found depth in their songwriting and polished live sets.

Before the six-piece take to the stage, Mere Women will show off their highly acclaimed new album in live form. The renowned four-piece create music with living and breathing tendencies, the velocity and rhythmic power of their post-punk melodies often dictating haunting, restless moods. Also opening Sydney’s soiree is electronic producer and performance artist, Post Motel. Working with visual elements and tactile environments, Post Motel sets up unique genre-mashing live shows exploring gender, sexuality and rebirth, often incorporating sets, actors and guest instrumentalists.

Red Bull Sound Select Melbourne

Red Bull Sound Select Melbourne pays homage to dystopian dance floors in August. Led by Chapter Music founders, Ben O’Connor and Guy Blackman, you might find the month’s handpicked lineup of artists in a post-apocalyptic nightclub. Their analog, electronic and often percussive-led sounds are alien and futuristic in colour, but wholly physical - pushing the audience past their spatial threshold.

Melbourne favourites NO ZU will guide August’s Victorian affair with their eight-piece housey mix of deep grooves, horns and Latin percussion - taking a high energy fix from boogie, dub and disco and turning it into a heaving dance floor. Riding off their recent European tour and Chapter Music released Afterlife LP, the group will be in peak heat form for Red Bull Sound Select.

Warming the room will be the powerful, bass lit reverberations of Various Asses, a one-woman production fast becoming one of the country’s most talked about electronic acts. Alongside selling out her own EP launch, Asses has supported Jersey star, UNiiQU3 and Elysia Crampton. Meanwhile, dystopic master Corin, will open the evening, with her near-cybernetic blend of crystal synths and instrumental grime rhythms setting the mood. Corin has drawn the attention of tastemakers nationwide with her mind-twisting live show and productions on label home, Wondercore.

In turn with I OH YOU’s Johann Ponniah and Laneway Festival’s Travis Banko, FBi Radio and Chapter Music are the local Red Bull Sound Select curators for Sydney and Melbourne respectively. Each month, Red Bull Sound Select curators support and nurture live music discovery by pairing local established artists with breaking talent across the year’s designated events.

Prepare to experience a tightly curated display of natural environments and belonging in Sydney, followed by a dystopic display of sound and space in Melbourne with some of the country’s boundary-pushing acts this August. Register your RSVP to attend at www.redbullsoundselect.com. Capacity is strictly limited. With RSVP tickets are $3, without door entry is $10. Arrive early for special offerings, including bespoke food and drink.
