Hey there Ivey! Congratulations on the release of your ‘love + miscellanea’ EP!

HEY! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell us a bit about each of the tracks?

Of course!

Bodies - explores sexuality and what defines a relationship to an individual. It’s about youthful curiosity, questioning yourself, questioning what love is, questioning what sexuality is etc.

Talk Talk - describes the initial pursuit of wanting to make a connection with somebody else. You know when you first start going on a date with someone and you’re like “This is great, but I really hope this girl doesn’t fucking break my heart”

Scream - talks about the dark side of mental health, and how in order to love someone else you must also love yourself. This was a big thing for me personally, going through a huge battle with my mental health last year, I wrote this song as a kind of coping mechanism for it.

Valentine - explores the conflicting expectations of a relationship. Expectations was a thing that drove a previous relationship of mine apart, and this song delves into how two people expecting different things can be extremely toxic if it’s not communicated properly.

Midnight - gives an insight into intimacy, and is really just about having lots of sex.

Fall Apart - is the immediate impact of a relationship coming to an end. The whole heartbreak thing might be over done but at the end of the day it fucking sucks and you’re going to write about it.

I hate u - deals with the loss, resentment and loneliness of heartbreak but also the freedom of individuality. You can hear in the chorus lyrics of this song, how it deals with that push and pull of wanting someone back but also never wanting to see them again.

And what was the writing and recording process like?

The writing process actually took place over the course of two years. The first demo being written in around April of 2018 and the last in January of this year. All of the songs off this EP apart from Fall Apart were recorded with Konstantin Kersting, however all of them also feature our own production, which is something we’re extremely proud of. This EP was a challenge for us. It’s a display of discovery, us finally discovering the sonic direction we’ve been striving for, us discovering that we don’t have to stick to a single genre, that we can do this ourselves and that our songs can stand up on their own.

It was really fun to bring this EP to life. It’is the culmination of a rollercoaster two years for us as a band.

As a band, how have you tackled the challenges of 2020 so far?

During the Queensland lockdowns we were all separated. This proved to be an extremely difficult and dark place for us as a band to be honest. We lost our way, we stopped communicating as much, we all really didn’t know where the band would end up.

When restrictions finally lifted, we all saw eachother and had a big honest and open talk. We set our priorities, our goals and our ambitions. Now, we’ve actually become closer than ever, and we’re working harder than ever, it’s a really exciting time for us.

Are there any records you’ve had on repeat this year?

Think the biggest few for us as band were:

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form

Disclosure - Ecstasy

Tame Impala - The Slow Rush

And some great local ones:

Golden Vessel - COLT

Parcels - THE LIVE ALBUM

Ziggy Ramo - Black Thoughts

You recently announced a string of shows across the East Coast, how does it feel to be able to it the road?

So good. Like so so so good. We’re a live band at heart, we love playing shows and feeding off audience energy. So to be able to hit the road, even in different type of way, is exciting.

And what should your audiences expect from those shows?

Well we played our first “sit down” type of show earlier this year and realised we weren’t ready for how different it is to play to a sit down audience. So we’ve taken the time to really work on the soundscape of the show, blending songs, extended interludes. It’s really exciting cause we’re learning how to create a beautiful live show, but also plan to keep the same exciting energy we’ve always had.

And finally, what’s something we might not know about Ivey?

Hmmmm.

We all really, really like Grime and Trap. Like it’s our hype up before any show. Think Skepta, Aitch, Travis Scott etc.

We love dancing and clubbin’ together, house music is lit.
