EAST AV3's favourite thing about the SA music community.
This November 3rd, the 2020 South Australian Music (SAM) Awards will be celebrating the achievements of musicians, producers, videographers and venues from what’s been a decidedly unpredictable 12 months.
Held for the first time in a specially constructed outdoor format, the 2020 SAM Awards continue to be a highlight of the South Australian music industry calendar, celebrating the best in local music now and looking ahead to the New Year.
Helming proceedings at the SAM Awards this year will be Three D Radio’s Isaac Selby, bringing that local music expertise and knowledge to the role; guiding everyone through the ceremony, which will see the best of South Australian music celebrated across 29 Industry Voted and People’s Choice award categories (Check out the full list below).
Excited to be one of the only awards ceremonies that can take place with an audience during Australian Music Month, the organisers of the SAM Awards are looking forward to celebrating with the South Australian music community, while looking forward to 2021. As a UNESCO City of Music, Adelaide has become a hub of creativity for musicians in recent years, with national and international attention being drawn to the amount of artists who have been taking their art beyond SA, out to the world.
Ahead of the awards we were able to chat with nominees EAST AV3 on all things SAM Awards, SA acts & life advice.
EAST AV3, are three young guns out of Adelaide that produce intoxicating bars and beats. Within the first few seconds of their debut track 'Running Through The Fire' you'll realise EAST AV3 have that cinematic effect. Since then they have been busy pushing the boundaries of Australian Hip-Hop and doing so with notice.
EAST AV3
Can you introduce yourself:
East Av3 started their Journey on East Avenue when they started making music together in a spare bedroom. During school classes were spent writing, lunch was spent giving demos the ‘car test’. We would throw parties using equipment hired for our schools social. Which captured the essence of our spirit during the time spent at East Avenue.
We share similar tastes in music, art, fashion and design. We aspire to create a culture that is recognised around the world.
We started making music on a guitar HERO MIC and office works speakers. We found a way
to get to where we’re at now only due to the resources that were available to us here in SA.
A professional studio, close friends and a club environment is all it took to get the ball
rolling. Now all we had to do was make some good songs…..
What does the opportunity of winning a SAM Award mean to you?:
To be nominated for a music award that is representative of our home state is exciting. It is
important that not only our creative endeavours are noticed but the recognition of the
platform we as musicians are a part of. There has recently been a change in Uni SA’s
program, and they now have a faculty “Uni SA creative”. This is great for South Australians
who are driven to be creative to get the recognition they deserve. If Uni is not your thing
however there should still be resources available to reach your goals in the best way possible.
Why is it important to forge ahead with the SAM awards despite what COVID 19 has thrown at the music industry this year?:
We are fans of anyone working in the music industry in SA with the intent to grow respect and further boost our community. The SAM Awards are a great way to recognise talent in SA and South Australian music development.
What’s your advice to upcoming musicians?
Practice, Practice, Practice, Content, Content, Content. Are the ying and yang of growing as
an artist. The more you put into your craft the better it’ll become, and quality content
creates greater swell around your concept.
Favourite thing about the SA music community?
The local music industry has huge potential if the talent works to uplift each other to
broaden our horizons. Adelaide has many unique venues that should be taken advantage of
instead of losing homegrowns interstate. Lion Arts, Thebarton theatre, as well as smaller
venues jive and rocket bar (even Crippen place as a whole) are just some of the unique
venues SA has to offer. A lot of the time really creative people do not pursue their aspiration
in fear of falling under the radar. SA deserves the limelight.
Anything upcoming your stoked on?
We have been working on ways in which we can continue to grow as artists during the year
we all know very well. Our hope is to showcase everything we have this Christmas by
hosting an event that ideally will have minimal OR no restrictions. It’s important to dream.
With support from the community we hope that live music festivals return and we can all
enjoy the experience of performance.
As always, the SAM’s Industry and Major awards will be decided by a panel of 15 national and local judges who represent and work across various facets of the industry and are valued members of the overarching Australian music community, with the People’s Choice awards having been decided by fans across the country. Check back on November 4th to see who the winners are!
The SAM Awards is looking ahead to the future in continuing their commitment to celebrating the thriving community of musicians that really make SA Great.
