Introducing Loiter

Hey there Loiter, how’s it going?

Fantastic

Congratulations on the release of ‘In This Town’, can you tell us a bit about the track?

Thank you soo much, So Darren wrote this originally 12 years ago for a previous band back when he was in the UK. When he wanted to play music in Brisbane it was one of the first songs he showed us back in 2017. Fast forward to now It feels like this song has been on an adventure starting in England, migrating to Australia, survived a pandemic and only now in 2020 does it get to be released to the world. Lyrically it is driven on Darrens’ volatile relationship where he could see that it was ending and she was going to move away but in his immaturity didn’t want it to. I think we can all relate to an early young first relationship where you wanted it to last and Darren expresses his personal experience through In This Town.

We hear that Loiter brought together 5 members from Brisbane, Newcastle and the UK. How did the formation of the band roll out?

Originally, I was in a covers band where we needed a bass player and after looking online, we found Darren. I messaged him asking if he wanted to come along to a jam and see if it would be a fit and he suggested in true British fashion to meet at the pub and have a beer. I was the only one who went along and we chatted and had beers for hours discussing music finding a common love for Queens Of The Stone Age. He also had mentioned he hadn’t been in the country for very long but wanted to play music again and this was a good place to start. Long story short we decided to start our own band where we recruited long time friend Tim to play on the kit. As we started writing songs together, we soon found out we needed another guitar player and after months and months of looking we recruited Amber who lucky for us could also sing. Towards the end of that year Amber told us that she loved playing in Loiter but she wanted to pursue a career in Radiography which after looking into it couldn’t do in Brisbane. Months after we released Alternative Sidekick Amber had to move to Newcastle so she could start University and start working towards being a Radiologist. It's been about a year or so now where we added Brandon giving us a three-guitar approach to our music and we try to make it work. Luckily, we are in a digital age so we can still discuss band stuff, write together and still be a band despite the distance.

Do you have a go-to approach for writing and recording Loiter tracks?

Our usual recipe is as follows

Create a riff, hook or chord progression. Sometimes as a whole song or just individual sections.

Demo the idea and upload so we can all see what we think.

Write lyrics and melody usually by Amber or Darren.

Jam the song out as a band fleshing out sections and parts

Update the demo with sections

Discuss whether its worth being a single, on an E.P. or scrap it for parts

What releases do you have on repeat at the moment?

Tim has been really into his metal/punk lately giving Mindreader by A Day To Remember and Supremacy by FEVER 333 a lot of attention. Brandon has been loving Idles’ latest album release Ultra Mono and has been raving about The Strokes' latest album The New Abnormal. Darren has been showing me this garage rock band called Ash that’s a lot of fun and the latest Deftones single Ohms always playing. Amber and I have been playing the latest Dave the band album which is just a really well written album. Amber being in Newcastle was lucky enough to see their album release show.

What can we expect to hear and see from you next?

We recorded another single back to back with In This town so expect that later in the year. We love playing music live and hope once border restrictions are lifted we can perform again with our favourite artists around Australia.
