Pure Milk's top 5 secrets to a lovely garden

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us!

 Anytime!

Congrats on the release of ‘Pressure’ - are you feeling a bit of pressure off your own shoulders now that it’s out to the world?

Honestly yeah, we started writing the song nearly 3 years ago, and we’ve been sitting on the masters for well over 6 months. It feels so damn good to have it released into the world.

The imagery for the release feels very botanically centred - can you tell us a bit about that?

Hahaha, I guess I’m going through a gardening phase, which is just the quintessential mid 20’s thing to do. My collection of windowsill pot plants is steadily growing by the day, we just planted a grapefruit tree actually! Those sunny, horticultural vibes just felt right.

With that in mind, can you share your top 5 secrets to a lovely garden?

Alright okay, this took a while but here are my top 5

1.     Plenty of natives!

2.     Anything can be used for a pot plant, old cups, ex-watering cans, random stuff you find from the tip shop, nothing is off limits!

3.     Don’t be scared to give plants a trim or a prune, it’ll benefit in the long run.

4.     You must have a water bath for the birds, especially in summer.

5.     If your garden isn’t 80% veggies you’re definitely doing it wrong.

‘Pressure’ talks about everyday anxieties, which I think a lot of people can relate to, particularly in the current climate. Do you find songwriting to be a cathartic process in dealing with these pressures?

Yeah definitely, for me at least I enjoy writing songs because I can get a bunch of things off my chest. Not that everything I write is a literal reflection of my life, most of what I write is fictional characters and imaginary situations, but it feels cathartic when I do it.

Your music takes its form through blending a few different genres - there’s a bit of alt-country twang, folk, indie rock, and punk sensibility flickering through. What do you have on your own playlists that might find its way into the Pure Milk sound?

Oh it’s been super varied at the moment. I’ve been really enjoying Kevin Morby and Julia Jacklin, I saw them both at Nine Lives Festival this year and they’re just amazing, lyrically on another level. They definitely inspired the sonics of Pressure and probably the entire EP. More recently though I’ve been spinning a lot of Perfume Genius and Fiona Apple, a little bit of Charlie XCX’s new album too, 2020 has been a damn solid year for new music thus far.

What are some of your pre-iso gig highlights?

One of the last gigs we played in 2019 before going on summer holiday bunkering down to record this EP was with Donny Benet. It was down at the beachy in Byron and the crowd was just wild, that man is incredible his showmanship is something else. We also played our first headline shows around the same time which were amazing.

What else do you have coming up, and where can readers follow Pure Milk and find your music?

Well we have a new EP coming out in the next few months, it’s titled Garden Anxiety (horticultural theme continues) and we’re super excited for y’all to hear it. Other than that we’re currently organising a bunch of shows for our live return, I can’t say too much yet but we got some big things planned for the rest of the 2020.

Thanks again for your time, all the best with the release!
