Whats next for Billy Otto?

Global trekker and Byron Bay-based singer-songwriter, producer and eco warrior Billy Otto offers up his latest labour of love. Let Me Loose is a regenerative war cry that appeals to the inner-child and offers up unrivalled access to a divine sense of freedom.

Billy Otto’s sound lands somewhere between Radiohead and The Beatles. With confessional choruses, apprehending lyrics and sun-drunk vocals, Billy’s desire to stir audiences is self-evident. Finding global success over the last 4 years, Billy has toured over 30 countries, building a loyal following in Brazil, Sweden, USA, Japan and selling out shows in Australia with his raw and energetic presence.

Following the release of an eminent cover of The Cranberries’ Dreams with Kyle Lionhart and Our Song with a non-for profit collaboration for The Tambah Project, Billy Otto returns felicitously with a solo single. Crystalised by a chorus that you feel you’ve heard a thousand times before, Let Me Loose envelops you in pure nostalgia. This comforting familiarity of the 60s and 70s is felt through Otto’s warm-bodied falsetto harmonies and via a haven of George Harrison inspired hooks.

In the last 12 months Billy Otto has played support shows for the likes of YumiZouma and Kyle Lionhart. To celebrate the release of Let Me Loose, Billy will be going on tour alongside a number of supports.

Hey, How are you?

So good! Feeling super excited about life these days. Seriously.. Possibly never been so happy in my life.

Discovering new things everyday as I surf, write music and listen to my little heart. It’s been a really healing year for me amidst the covid chaos.

Where are you based?

Right now I’m living up here in Byron, surrounded by trees and ocean and lovely humans. I’ve literally found it to be one of the greatest decisions I’ve made.

It was my time to leave Sydney and re-ground and re-earth.

What’s going on in the Billy Otto camp?

Well, just been producing a bunch of music for bands, and working on my new podcast and new album. Yeah it’s been one wild ride over the last few months.

I’m in love with my new girl, and that’s been radical.

How would you describe your music to your Grandparents?

An ounce of John Lennon’s reflective nuance with a drop of Bowie’s cosmological impulse mixed with bogan newcastle-surfer-angst and youthful insecurity;

A sonic smorgasbord of male vulnerability, coastal introspection, dreamy colors and explosive choruses!

What is Let Me Loose about?

I’d just come out of a breakup with my ex-fiance. The decision felt good, amicable and true for both of us, but with any deeply connected relationship there’s always ghosts that linger in the

post-mortem phase. I had a bit of resentment towards my ex that was leaking out in some texting with her one night. But I felt like I was holding onto some unneeded burdens that didn’t need to be there.

So yeah, the song is about letting go.

It’s also about letting go of beliefs that don’t serve you anymore. I used to be a Christian Minister. I realized come out of that season of my life that my conditioning and programming was so deep and

had often caused me to suppress how I truly felt and to act and react in fear shame. I believe that every human has the ability to access that deep inner divinity; and this song is a celebration of that.

Where did you record Let Me Loose?

The track was produced initially in Sydney at Caleb Tasker’s studio in Marrickville.

I took the stems and then began to work on the track in my own studio in Byron. We even tracked the drums in my house studio with my dear friend Bobby Alu.

Nowadays I just really like working on my tracks in my own space. I don’t like the rush and glam of the big studio as much anymore.

Whats next for Billy Otto?

I head off on tour this week with Tay Oskee, and next week I have my headline shows in Sydney and my tour with Kyle Lionhart begins.

So yeah, good good times. Since covid, show’s have not been a thing. So it’s a great feeling to be sharing these sacred songs with a live and engaged audience.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t take anything personally.
