A QUICK CHAT WITH CREO

1.   The new track ‘Juliet’ is such a banger! How did you guys come about writing this one? What’s the story behind it?

Thanks! It actually started as an idea we jammed out in 2017 and just kept on the back burner.  When we were planning demoing some stuff we went through some old recordings of rehearsals to see if anything sparked inspiration and there was that swampy, swaggered guitar riff that Carlos plays in the chorus tucked away in a session. We hashed it out for a few months last year and turned it into this two part straight verse - swampy chorus vibe.  It’s all about our beloved hometown, Sydney and the helplessness we have felt watching it slowly lose its vibrancy.  It’s no mystery, the city’s nightlife has seriously declined over the last five or so years and this is our view on it all.

2.   You guys have such a unique sound. How did CREO form?

We had been playing in different bands in Sydney - we just met at local shows where we shared the same bills.  We realised we all had similar multicultural upbringings and found loud, abrasive music as a way to best express ourselves.  I guess in terms of our sound, we are really meticulous when creating different textures and colours through the use of guitars and percussion in our music. The goal is always to make it passionate, honest, and hard hitting but also hipnotic and seamless in structure.

3.   We are going through a really strange time at the moment. How have you guys been keeping busy in isolation? Any tips?

We’ve been doing heaps of writing and just taking the time to practice our craft. Jorjee has taken up trying to learn the harmonica - so hopefully we can throw that into a few new tracks somewhere! Other than our tips would be to just try to enjoy the slower pace of things at the moment.  Life is fucking hectic and time usually gets away from you - so as long as you and those around you are healthy, happy and safe enjoy having that time to do the things you wouldn’t usually have the time to put energy into.

4.   Has isolation motivated you guys to write? Can we look forward to some more music?

We’re finding there is more time in the day to just sit down, play and write. Jorjee is usually always sending us phone recordings of new ideas but this has made him up the anti! We had a whole new batch of material we were keen to put out over the next 18 months at least before this all happened, so I think like many other artists 2021 is going to see a huge influx of music because we’ve all just have so much more time to hone in and focus on creating.

5.   How do you guys think the music industry will come out after this pandemic is over?

Creatives are a resilient, malleable bunch because it’s fucking hard at the best of times so I think we’ll get through! This has definitely made artists and industry think outside of the box in terms of trying to engage audiences and grow their fan base.  We’ve found it’s made everyone open to collaborating with people they wouldn’t usually. We never stop learning and the best way to do that is to work with other people and learn from each other. It’s levelled the playing field in the sense that there is less nepotism. We just hope the industry doesn’t have short memories once this is all over and people continue this culture of being open to trying new things and taking more risks.
