A QUICK CHAT WITH SMALLS

 1.   ‘Tail Lights’ is such a great track! Sounds like it has some real emotions behind it, can you tell us what it’s about?

I think when you boil ‘Tail Lights’ down, it’s about the ups and downs of being in a relationship with a partner who struggles with their mental health. It sounds like a really dire message, but I think the melodies and production at their very least create a sense of optimism!

2.   How did your music career start? Have you always known you wanted to do this?

I guess I picked up the guitar when I was a kid after my Mum decided I was too hyperactive and needed something to thrash around on.

I moved to Sydney and got a degree in entertainment management, so I guess the career may have started there. I’ve been around the Sydney circuit a bit, but going solo is a new thing so it’s kinda scary!

3.   We are going through some pretty tough times at the moment having to isolate from other people. How have you been coping with isolation? Has it been hard for you?

It’s been tricky at times, I’m still doing my nine-to-five from home during the day and then writing and recording at night, so it’s a lot of screen time, but I understand I’m very lucky to still be in the job. Being a raging introvert, I’m totally on board with the isolation, but it’s important to keep up with friends – I’ve just being trying to be a bit more formal when I reach out.

4.   Have you picked up any new hobbies or skills while in isolation?

You know that point where you do your washing and you don’t even fold it away? You just leave it there in the basket until you wear it again? That’s a skill I’ve been working on. We’ve also been giving Overcooked 2 a work out on the Playstation 4 - it’s so chaotic and anxiety inducing that I’m not sure whether it’s a hobby or a punishment.

5.   As an artist, has isolation given you more motivation to create? Can we expect more new music from SMALLS?

Absolutely. More time at home means more time working on ideas, but in saying that, it’s so easy to get burnt out during these times. I think we put lots of pressure on ourselves to be productive while we’re stuck at home, but it’s totally okay not to be! New SMALLS music is just around the corner. I’ll be seeding out a few singles over the coming months so make sure to stay up to date where you can!
