A QUICK CHAT WITH PLUTO JONZE

Wow, loving the new tracks! Congratulations on the upcoming album, tell us about the journey of writing it?

Thank you! And wow yeah, it’s been a long, long road. I feel this album is a culmination of all I’ve learned in song writing and production in the years since my last major release. The oldest song on the album was started 6 years ago, but only now do I feel I’ve been able to execute the vision artistically.

This seems like a new sound for you. Absolutely loving it, tell us why you’ve taken this new approach? Was it easy to adjust to a new style of music?

To me this change in sound is more an expression of a side that’s always been there, it’s just until now I haven’t found the right way to release it or haven’t had the experience and production chops to express it in a way, I’m happy with. My more atmospheric, reflective songs have taken a back seat over the years of touring with the likes of Ball Park Music, Cub Sport and Jungle Giants. The poppier stuff made sense in that context but hopefully I still carry some of those hooky flava’s across to these new moodier vibes.

We are seeing a pretty big change in life as we know it. Do you think the music industry will change after the pandemic is over?

I feel like isolation has made people realise how coming together physically is so integral for emotional well-being. In the short term I reckon demand for live music will be huge whenever it becomes available again. I really hope artists and venues can hold on through this period so there’s an industry there on the other side to fulfill what I’m sure will be a big swell of punters wanting to exorcise their iso demons at a gig. I’ll be among them!

Can we expect live shows from Pluto Jonze when we come out the other side of restrictions?

Smaller shows might be possible in the short-medium term, though it looks like big gigs and festivals will almost certainly be on hiatus for a while longer. I’m working on the viability of small, short, pop-up style gigs for people in small numbers, maybe even out the front of fans’ houses for example. A dial-a-pluto type scenario. Stay tuned!

If you could be stuck in isolation with one person, who would it be?

Either Kirin J Callinan or my friend Oscar Bishop - both nuts! Maybe too nuts...

Or Yuval Harari and just pick his brains on everything.
