A QUICK CHAT WITH STUPID BABY

Congratulations on an exceptional debut single! Can you tell us the themes behind the song?

Thanks! ‘Feline’ was a song that came together pretty naturally, we just started with the riff and jammed on it till it felt like a song. Jake and I wrote the lyrics which were pretty stream of consciousness. But when we broke it down, it felt a lot like we were painting a picture of a pretty tense and murky relationship. We wanted the verses to hold that tension and the chorus to feel like a release from that.

This is your first release, yet you’ve already shared stages with bands like The Chats, Skeggs, Ocean Alley and many more Australian juggernauts! Have you got any stories to share with us from any shows?

We feel quite lucky to have played some great shows with great bands, without having released any music. Here is a 100% true story as recounted by Eli Milojkovic (our bass player):

“One night we had a show in a small pub in our hometown. Mid set I noticed a guy standing side stage and staring straight at me. He was small in stature and about 55 years old. He kind of looked like a mix between Bill Bailey and Sloth from the Goonies. He had a Jackson model Flying V (white) in one hand and a rolled-up guitar lead in the other. He looked as if he was going to hand the guitar to one of us. Was this man a tech?

After a while, everyone was well aware of this man’s presence. Then just like that, he slipped the strap (‘police line do not cross') over his head and waddled onto the stage making a B-line for the bass rig. All the while, we are mid song, and assumed the man was a tech, so nobody did anything. Before we knew it, he was plugged in and absolutely soaring through the 2nd channel of the bass rig. He began blessing the audience with what we assume was “Everlong” by The Foo Fighters, but it was hard to make it out over our own noise.

The man was looking enthusiastic but kept looking at our hands and screaming out different chords for us to play. We were all super confused at this stage and stopped playing because we were laughing so hard. As soon as Liz’s mic became vacant, the man wasted no time and walked up to the mic and screamed “Thank you Seattle!”

He dropped his guitar and shook all of our hands, then shuffled his way off the stage in a confident Danny DeVito like fashion.  We tried to find our new friend after show, but we’ve never seen or heard from him since.”

The vocal blend shown between Liz and Jake in this song is intriguing and melting. Almost reminds us of Alice In Chains. How long have you two been singing and harmonising together?

Thanks! That’s a cool reference. Both Jake and I have been singing in our own bands prior to Stupid Baby, but we probably first casually sung together in 2016. Then we started singing more when Stupid Baby formed in late 2017.

What plans have you got that you’re allowed to share with us?

We are playing Rolling Sets festival in Coffs Harbour on the 26th of Jan, which will be fun. We will be playing some of our own shows which we will announced soon. Other than that, we are just going to keep releasing music. We have a fair few songs recorded and will probably release an EP sometime in the next few months. :)

‘Feline’ will be available worldwide on Friday January 17
