What’s next for FLUIR?

Congratulations on the release of your debut EP ‘Just Us’. Can you please tell us what inspired these tracks? Where was it recorded? Who produced the EP?

Thank you!

I wrote the EP over the course of the past 12 months, with tracks ‘Same Flame’ and ‘Another World’ both written during the initial lockdown period.

All tracks I wrote and produced in my living room with a midi keyboard and laptop (with the exception of ‘Make Me Feel’ which was produced by Chì). Unfortunately I don’t have my own dedicated studio space, maybe one day! Sometimes I had to hang up towels along the window while I was recording vocals to stop the sound of the cars driving past haha.

First and foremost, I wanted the EP to shine a light on the highs and lows of creativity. At the time of writing the EP, I wasn't yet where I wanted to be with my music in terms of 'success'.  When I looked more closely at what I defined as 'success' however, I realised that it’s an ever-moving target governed by ego, shifting with every key milestone reached. I felt like I was driving myself mad and losing sight of why I started writing music in the first place. It wasn't until I wrote the title track 'Just Us' - the most vulnerable song I've ever written - that I felt my perception had been recalibrated and I'd found my love for music once more.

We hear that that you’ve worked with Sam Littlemore in 2019? Any plans to tour with Pnau?

Yes, I worked alongside Sam in 2018 to 2019 on my previously released singles ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Feeling For You’ and ‘Change’.

That’s a great idea! I’ll have a chat with Sam and my booking agent and see if that’s something we can arrange :)

For those people who don’t know your history, when did you start DJing, performing and writing songs?

Growing up my parents made me learn classical piano (which I hated), but in retrospect I’m grateful to have that foundation and understanding of music. I ended up completing AMEB 8th Grade piano, however my heart has always been in contemporary music.

I first started writing my own songs at age 12 when I became obsessed with pop punk music (e.g. Avril Lavigne and Blink-182). That’s when I bought my first guitar and naturally started writing and singing my own songs.

I started out performing at open mic nights across Melbourne when I was 18. I didn’t have a stage name at the time, I just performed my own songs by singing and playing guitar.

It wasn’t until 2016 when I released my first track as FLUIR that I performed live as part of a ticketed show, and have since been lucky enough to perform at festivals including Groovin The Moo (VIC), Wine Machine (NSW) and support artists including Nyxen on her sold out Australian headline tour in 2019.

2020 has been a volatile year for the music industry, how has isolation affected your touring plans this year?

Isolation has meant I lost all the gigs I had lined up pre-covid. Also, isolation means I am unable to tour to support the release of my EP. However, to make up for it I recorded a live audio visual performance of my EP which is now available to view online.

What’s next for FLUIR?

I’ve been lucky enough to team up with some amazing artists to remix the title track ‘Just Us’, I will be announcing more on that in the coming weeks. Otherwise I’ll be busy writing and producing new material for 2021 and hopefully playing live sometime soon!

Thank you Fluir!
