What’s next for Wharves in 2021?

We’re loving your new single ‘Think Straight’. Can you please tell us what the track is about?

Thanks so much.  It’s about taking wrong turns and sometimes finding dead ends.  Kind of experimenting with life to see what works and doesn’t work and getting a bit lost in the process.

Can you tell us about your song writing process?

This one started out as the melody from the verse with slightly different chords.  The lyrics actually came from co-writing with Sarah Buckley and Caitlyn Shadbolt who are amazing young Australian songwriters they helped me mould the story.  Then I was listening to the song “Running Red Lights” by The Avalanches and loved the chord progression and played them in a different key on the guitar then wrote the chorus over that and found out my verse melody works with those chords too and sort mashed them together.  So it’s really a lot of experimenting and taking from different sources around me.  We then bashed it all out in our new rehearsal shed.  All recording, producing and mixing was done us (mostly Mike though haha)

‘Think Straight’ is accompanied with a brilliant DIY video starring your rescue Staffy! It’s a fun look at the day in the life of a dog, who came up with this concept?

I can’t remember who came up with the concept but Scott mapped it out, shot the footage and edited it so he is MVP for the video.  I think John Safran did something similar about 20-years ago for his show and got it played on late-night Rage.

We hear that you’re from Lennox Head and playing some shows in Byron Bay, Burleigh Heads and the Back In The Sun festival with Hockey Dad, what can fans expect to see at a Wharves gig? Are there other local bands that you’d recommend that we should keep an eye out for?

We like to have a lot of fun and we like people that come along to have fun.  It’s very dynamic, can be huge and energetic but other parts are soft and tender.  All the bands at our upcoming gigs will be amazing.  Some local acts to look out for are Peach Fur, Greatest Hits and Jaguar Jonze.

What’s next for Wharves in 2021?

We are finishing off our EP.  Working on more DIY projects.  Playing shows where possible with COVID-19.  Mike is gonna learn to make gnocchi. Fraser is going to learn to kickflip his skateboard, Matt has taken up kickboxing and Scott is teaching Chevy some tricks.
