Brisbane’s favourite BYO festival and infamous weekend sleepover party, Red Deer Music & Arts Festival, is returning for its seventh year on Saturday 14 October 2017. The iconic ‘BYO booze ‘n couch’ festival will deliver a memorable day and night of astronomical entertainment at the Mount Samson amphitheatre, as part of the festival’s 2017 SPACE ODDITY theme.

A dozen musical acts have been added to this year’s ‘space mission’, joining previously announced ‘captains’ Sydney rockers The Preatures and Brisbane electronic-whiz The Kite String Tangle.

Brisbane dub aficionados Kingfisha will have all Red Deer ‘astronauts’ grooving along to their infectious roots and reggae rhythms, while Sunshine Coast blues powerhouse Transvaal Diamond Syndicate will satisfy any cravings for raucous rockabilly vibes and slide-guitar riffs.

Rounding out the second and final artist lineup announcement is inspirational rapper MC Wheels, who suffers from a rare condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress, brother-sister folk-pop duo Alex & Bec Crook, funky all-girl quartet Pink Matter, and rising rockers Mayhem for Mary.

The full 2017 lineup features over 25 local and interstate acts across a variety of genres, including surf quartet Band of Frequencies, alt-rock groovers Shag Rock, neo-roots trio The COOL CALM, dirty-dance duo MEZKO, folk songstress Leanne Tennant, and dream-pop songwriter Tiarne.

There is a limited amount of General Admission Tickets and camping passes still available for the 2017 festival, so head to reddeerfest.com.au now to nab boarding passes to this year’s musical voyage through the galaxy!

With a lineup featuring a plethora of genres, and seven acts with a female member, festivalgoers can look forward to a program bustling with the best in emerging local talent playing alongside household names in the Australian music scene.

“This year’s festivalgoers, or ‘astronauts’ if you will, can look forward to beautiful ballads, energetic roots, and rollicking tunes, before The Kite String Tangle and The Preatures bring the house down with two very different, entertaining sets,” says Festival co-founder Bas Pelly.

As usual, the festival will include a wide variety of live music, unique art installations, and an immersive camping experience. For the first time in its history, the festival will feature in 2017 a third live music stage – with a focus on providing opportunities for regional, emerging artists.

“We’re pumped that we can finally provide a third stage area as it allows us to get even more awesome locals bands and a greater variety of artists involved, such as the amazing girls in Pink Matter and the inspirational MC Wheels!” says Pelly.

Festival organisers are promising a super-chilled event that treats its patrons like adults, with few rules, plenty of crowd participation opportunities, and no lining up for expensive drink tokens.

“Red Deer is basically a house party at your mate's place, except your mate lives on 40 acres of pristine grazing land beneath the rolling hills of the D'aguilar Range.

“Instead of listening to an awful playlist on your mate’s iPod, you'll boogie to an exciting and eclectic mix of emerging acts from around the country while you sip your BYO bevvie of choice, on your BYO couch, while pondering which food truck’s menu you'll explore first.”

Apart from a renowned live music program, festivalgoers will have their pick of a smorgasbord of activities and entertainment such as belly dancing, meditation and hula-hoop workshops, the annual ‘Fashion of the Fields’ dance-off contest, and a return of the much loved Red Deer sack-race.

This year, organisers hope festivalgoers will embrace the SPACE ODDITY theme, which will see an array of astronauts, shooting stars, and extraterrestrial life forms take to the main stage and strut their stuff in front of thousands for a chance to win an exclusive prize.

The festival will also be welcoming even more ‘day’ ticket holders this year in the hope of reducing the carbon footprint on the beautiful hinterland site made by campers and cars. As such, several ‘Space Shuttles’ will ferry festival-bound astronauts from West End as well as Ferny Grove and Petrie train stations, providing a unique transport option for hundreds to the 2017 festival.

However, the festival will still offer overnight camping tickets and VIP ‘Our Deerest’ tickets, which include guest camping, hospitality and merchandise packs, and access to the VIP backstage bar.

Red Deer Music & Arts Festival is an inclusive event for people from all walks of life, and organisers encourage anyone with a “passion for music, the arts, and general mateship and shenanigans” to nab their tickets before they sell out.

Tickets range from $79 up to $199 (+ bf) for VIP ‘Our Deerest’ tickets.
