SYDNEY, NSW (August 4, 2017) – Last month, Red Bull Music Academy announced its eagerly awaited return to Sydney for the city’s sophomore Red Bull Music Academy Weekender, unveiling the musical minds that will descend upon Sydney from August 31 - September 3.
Today, Red Bull Music Academy reveals that the four-day festival will close on Sunday, September 3 with the Australian debut of techno-pioneer Carl Craig’s Synthesizer Ensemble performance at Sydney’sState Theatre. Spearheaded by Craig and award-winning composer, bandleader and pianist Kelvin Sholar, the evolving live performance will turn the Detroit godfather’s boundary-pushing techno masterpieces into soaring, symphonic arrangements.
A creative entrepreneur and world-renowned icon, Craig remains ahead of his league, continually challenging electronic music’s future through unrivalled productions and collaborations. First premiering in Paris in 2008, Craig joined with the Les Siècles orchestra (conducted by François-Xavier Roth), multi-instrumentalist techno mastermind Moritz von Oswald, and Francesco Tristano, who arranged and orchestrated his tracks for a symphonic live performance. The original recording of the show spawned a full-length album, Versus, released via Craig’s legendary Detroit imprint Planet E and InFiné. A unique combination of electronic and classical composition, Versus is a progressive eight-track collection of techno adapted for orchestra.
Carl Craig will be joined by Kelvin Sholar and fellow musicians Jon Dixon, Greg Burk, Christoph Adams and Jarrod Chase, to perform compositions from the release live with a symphony of synthesisers, lighting the picturesque surrounds of Sydney’s State Theatre. As part of Road to Weekender, Melbourne audiences can also witness Craig’s Synthesizer Ensemble from Melbourne Recital Centre on September 2.
"Road to Weekender will see highlight events with Peven Everett, Midori Takada and ABRA visit Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth - accompanied by a series of touring guest lectures with leading musical director, producer and drummer Joel Farland. Farland’s expertise in live production has seen him musically direct acts like Hayden James and Cosmo’s Midnight, as well as tour globally with acts like Broods, Miami Horror and Van She. Farland will lead lectures in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, giving insight into transforming studio tracks for live production and touring purposes. Support guests in each city include Paris-based electronic wonder Claudio in Perth, solo award-winning artist Elizabeth Rose in Melbourne, May Lyn in Brisbane, and Melbourne’s Alice Ivy in Adelaide - each revealing their unique songwriting and production knowhow."
Due to overwhelming demand Red Bull Music Academy Presents: No Fixed Address & Coloured Stone is sold out, but fans can still get tickets to A Conversation with Bunna Lawrie - the frontman, rhythm guitarist and founding member of ARIA Award winners Coloured Stone. This guest lecture will take audiences through an intimate and enlightening conversation about Bunna Lawrie’s award-winning career, life, art and conservation efforts. Also sold out is A Conversation with Tony Humphries, while limited tickets to Red Bull Music Academy’s late night rave - Zanzibar meets Mad Racket - headlined by house luminary Humphries, are still available.
The additional events add to a dynamic, curatorial line-up that sees Atlanta’s alt-R&B princess ABRAmake her Australian debut, Khalif (Le1f) and Waangenga Blanco premiere a hybrid virtual reality and dance spectacle, two step co-curator Peven Everett perform live in the open-air, plus the One Daycrew host a mammoth carpark party starring REMI.
Don’t miss attending these once-in-a-lifetime events, when Red Bull Music Academy Weekender and Road to Weekender celebrate the fearless artists shaping Sydney and Australia’s cultural identity, this August and September.
