A quick chat with Duckboi

Love the new track ‘Going to the Beach’! Was there anything unique about the writing process with this track?

Thanks so much! Well, it was a very spontaneous song, was hanging out one evening in our share house and picked up the guitar and just started singing the hook! (Going to the beach to catch some waves.) There’s not a lot in the lyrical content besides mindlessly obsessing over the beach. We really wanted to focus on creating interesting production and capture a raucous sprit that departs from the usual surf-punk world with greater textural depth.

When it comes to writing music, who are your biggest inspirations as a band?

Mac Demarco, Skegss and Dune Rats have always been a big influence on the sound of the band, with the production and song writing stylings of Kevin Parker. All of these groups stay so beautifully melodic and make music that resonate with people in different ways. A lot of musicians in our local scene such as The Vanns also serve as huge inspiration for us, they really set the tone and atmosphere of the music community around us.

The track is called ‘Going to the Beach’, if you had to choose your favourite beach which one would it be?

The Farm easily. Known more formally as Killalea Beach it’s my local and known as a great surf break. It exists in its own little world as you step out of a big new housing estate into this mostly untouched, beautiful state park. Always makes me feel at home and calm.

How would you describe your music to someone that has never listened to a Duckboi track?

We’re pretty varied as some of our music is very chilled out and poppy with vintage tones, with others such as this new one being much more chaotic, unpredictable and psych based. Overall, we like to think it’s just like the ocean, sometimes gently lulling, other times being powerful and unpredictable. Parts of our sound is reminiscent of the general surf-indie scene of Australia. However, we live by the mantra of creating music that sounds free flowing no matter the vibe and not restricted by boundaries of typical music formulas.

What are your goals for 2021? More music, live shows?

To be as active as we can really, hoping to have a whole bunch of new releases and start to play more shows all around the shop as the world starts to open up again. We bloody love the Australian music scene and just want to meet and connect with people all around.
