Australian producer cln has teamed up with vocalist/rap artist pseudo on the super fresh trap-layered track, ‘Switch Gears’.

The two have been long-time friends attending school together so it made sense for them to take their friendship to new levels of creativity.

“I started this instrumental about two years ago but I just had a chord progression and the piano bit. pseudo is a very talented writer and lyricist, so I sent him the rough instrumental and for about a year, we were sending stuff back and forth,” cln said.

Lyrically, ‘Switch Gears’ is rather forthcoming in terms of content with any heartbroken individual being able to connect to them.

“At the time when I wrote the lyrics, I felt like I'd been on autopilot for too long. Coming out of a yearlong relationship, the days felt stale and my nights were vividly unsatisfying. I guess it's about that struggle to break the loop and find something legitimately fulfilling,” pseudo said.

“pseudo’s lyrical content is very unique; he brings a lot of personality to the song. I’ve worked with rappers before but I’ve never had one feature on my own track, so this song is a slightly different direction for me,” cln said.

This is a slow turn-up song with phat beats, crisp rap verses and melodic choruses. Interestingly though, this chill vibe completely contradicts the state of cln’s life during the creative process.

“A lot of the writing and production for this song was done during really chaotic periods of my life. I’m in my fifth year of university, so the assignments and exams pile up very quickly. I used this project as a way to step back from the craziness and just sit and make something relatively relaxed,” cln said.

cln has also been developing his sound composing and producing music for the Queensland Ballet Contemporary Program “Bespoke”.

Earlier this year cln teamed up with Australian songstress Katie Noonan to create a collection of diverse electronic music, which was then performed live across six sold-out performances with the Queensland Ballet as part of their ‘Bespoke’ program, under the creative direction of renowned choreographer Amy Hollingsworth, and artistic director Li Cunxin.

“That project involved a lot of really weird electronic sound design, and lots of percussion all over the place. I learned a lot from that project, so I have tried to subtly apply those skills in this song,” cln said.

There is talk of a second season of the “Bespoke” performance, so stay tuned for more news on that over the coming months, as well as a digital release of the music written & recorded by cln & Katie Noonan titled ‘Glass Heart’.

‘Switch Gears’ however is available everywhere now including Spotify & iTunes, and be sure to add it to your end-of-week playlist as you wind down (or up) for the weekend.
