CUB SPORT return with new lush, gospel-inspired pop single "O Lord"

After the success of their debut album ‘This Is Our Vice’ last year, including their Hottest 100 top-25 track “Come On Mess Me Up”, Brisbane's Cub Sport return with the first taste of their forthcoming second record – the lush, gospel-inspired “O Lord”.

Taking another artistic leap forward, singer/songwriter Tim Nelson has brought fans on a journey from the indie pop sound of their two successful EPs, to the electronic influence of their debut album and now ascending to new heights with a unique, soulful sound that refuses to comply with convention.

"I wrote O Lord in the wake of coming out last year. I suddenly had everything I’d ever wanted. I was free to be my true self, I was finally in a relationship with the love of my life and I had full love and support from my friends and family, but what I didn’t expect was the realisation that when you get everything you’ve ever wanted you suddenly have everything to lose. This song ended up being my way of grappling with those feelings.” explains singer Tim Nelson.

Predominantly created at home, then co-produced with long-time collaborator John Castle, the much-anticipated track displays a new side of Cub Sport. While still deeply rooted in pop, the track also indulges soul, R’n’B, and gospel influences, making for Cub Sport's most exciting release to date.

“I followed the feeling from the intro and wrote the rest of the song from there. A month later we developed the drum loop with John Castle in his studio and then the whole song just clicked…The Gospel-influenced sound is probably a result of listening to a lot of Kanye’s The Life Of Pablo and Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book”

The song is the first new material since band members Tim and Sam came out as gay and in a relationship in mid-2016. Standing alongside out-and-proud guitarist Zoe, the group use their platform to speak out against homophobia. The band develop and encourage a safe community on their social media channels and at their live performances, as well as donating a portion of live ticket and merch sales to organisations close to their hearts including an animal shelter, and and LGBTQI scholarship.

The early-2016 release of their debut album ‘This Is Our Vice’ was a personal and musical journey that got the ball rolling on a momentous year, with the record achieving worldwide acclaim, including airplay on Triple j, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, BBC London and Amazing Radio as well as a swag of US stations such as KEXP and WXPN.

Break-out single off the album “Come On Mess Me Up” caught the attention of The 1975's Matty Healy and scored Cub Sport an invitation to join the UK band for their 2016 Australian arena tour. The pop-ballad proved to connect similarly across Australia and landed a much-coveted spot in triple j's hottest 100 coming in at #24 after high rotation airplay and over 2,000,000+ Spotify streams and 350,000+ YouTube views.

Cub Sport then wowed audiences with their performance of Kanye West's “Ultralight Beam” on triple j's Like A Version in August 2016, earning them praise from the station, with some people saying it was the best of the year.

With similar praise for singles “I Can’t Save You” and “Only Friend”, the success of the debut album saw the band tour The UK, Europe, North America and Canada as well as embarking on two sold-out headline tours of Australia. Cub Sport were also voted 'Most Popular Group' at the 2016 Queensland Music Awards.

Cub Sport have finished putting the final touches on album number two, set for release later in 2017. Premiering on Triple J over night, ‘O Lord’ shows a band hitting their stride and truly making their mark.
