What can we expect into the future from B.R.B? And for the rest of 2020?

Hey, B.R.B - congrats on the release of your first EP “Wake Up!” - how does it feel to have a project out?

[Txkeout] It feels great to finally let people hear our music. We've been working so hard and for so long, trying to perfect our sound and we picked the songs that we thought would showcase our talent, and versatility, while also making sure the ones we picked meant the most to us as a group. The feeling of reading peoples reviews, DMs and messages, telling us how much they love the release means everything to us, it's a real morale booster and it’s the reason why we do what we do.

[Gmolf] On top of that, being recognised for the work we put in is a crazy good feeling. Having artists that are a lot more established than we are, plus industry reps reaching out to us, showing love and giving us advice fuels our motivation and gets us hungrier for more success. Not to mention seeing the streams climb and be spread around the globe is also an insane feeling for sure.

You guys all met in high school, how did you decide to make music together and what role does everyone play?

[Damage] B.R.B has four members; Themi (Txkeout), Gomi (Gmolf), Ray (Rayzor) and Damien (Damage). Themi and Gomi are brothers, and they started making music as they were growing up. By chance, Themi met Ray and myself after being put in the same homeroom class, and we hit it off straight away.

[Rayzor] We were all pretty academically inclined, so we had to create our own time to hang out in between school work, which would usually be at recess, lunch, or any spare periods we had. Themi showed us his early music and Damo and I were immediately like, “yo i needa bop this errday.” Those recesses and lunches turned into all 3 of us sneaking out of class and hiding out in Damo’s in the school car park just listening and making as much music as we could; then into us basically living at Themi and Gomi’s house and spending as much time together as we could.

[Txkeout] The bro Gmolf and I are both vocalists in the group, I do a majority of the production as well. Rayzor and Damage do a bit of everything to just help us out, including helping with stuff like production/lyrics and marketing strategies to name a few. With B.R.B, we all have things that we do individually to help out the group, but in reality we’re just 4 best mates trying to make the most of what we’ve got, and we reckon we’re doing a decent job so far.

What does B.R.B stand for? What’s the message behind the name?[Gmolf] B.R.B stands for Brown Rich Boys, because that's what we are going to be, simple as that. We back ourselves and our goal and we know that one day, we’ll live up to the name we gave ourselves. We’re all from Sri Lankan descent, so the “Brown” in our name comes from the colour of our skin; we definitely think everyone should be proud of their own race and their heritage, and it's not something to shy away from. At the end of the day, we have massive respect for our culture, and growing up in Australia has let us further experience our own as well as many others.

[Rayzor] Rather than a label on us, we see B.R.B as our goal, and our name reminds us of that every day. B.R.B isn’t just the four of us either, we’re not claiming to be representing brown people or anything crazy like that, but the idea is like: “if these brown boys can stay winning AND proud of their culture, so can all the others out there”.

Your music video for Guard Down is currently on rotation on MTV. What’s the response been like from family and friends seeing you on TV?[Gmolf] It’s crazy, cos we grew up watching MTV; it was like our go-to for music videos! We’re crazy thrilled at the fact we got our video on there for all the MTV watchers to see.

[Damage] All of our friends and family kind of had a rough idea that we made music, but none of them really knew how serious we took it nor that it was turning into something that was more than just a hobby. I think seeing us on MTV really made them realise like, “damn, they’re actually going somewhere with this”.

What’s your process like when creating? Where do you get your inspiration?

[Txkeout] There’s no set process with us; we tend to just go with the flow with whatever vibe is presented. For example, with our track ‘SICKOFYOU!’ we’d all be sitting in a room together and decide “alright let’s make a song”, and after I’ve made the beat we brainstorm ideas for lyrics, hooks and even music videos. However, it’s not always a straightforward process. In contrast, our tracks ‘Lost!’ and ‘Friends!’ came off of experiences that impacted us, and the thing with us is, we use music to channel our emotions through; and with me I’m shy when it comes to talking to people about things like that, but when I’m in the stu, all of that goes away, and what you hear in those tracks I mentioned before it’s as raw as it’ll get from us.

The EP is deeply personal, even though it’s less than 10 minutes long, do you have a favourite song and why?

[Txkeout] Yeah, this project means so much to us. We wanted our first ever EP to be something special, so we decided to base some of these songs on situations and events that hit personally, like for example our tracks ‘Lost!’ and ‘Friends!’ with the intention to relate and connect with others personally.

[Rayzor] There’s a good range of songs on the EP, but the last 2 are definitely a contrast to the first 3. Other than showing our versatility, those songs really come from the heart and from experiences we’ve had in our past. It’s always been the same with us, if one of us is going through something, we all are; and listening “Lost!” and “Friends!” is one of the best ways to get to know us.

There’s so much talent emerging across Australia lately. Who are some of your favourites you’d love to work with?[Gmolf] We take pride and back ourselves because we think we bring something new to the table, something different from anything in the current Australian scene. In saying that though, the current Australian scene is really diverse, and everyone is out here making bangers, helping put the country on the map when it comes to the rap/hip-hop genre. I think the people just need to hear the other sounds that Australians can make, including us :),  and mix that in with the current scene to make the next big hit. In terms of artists we’d love to work with, Larissa Lambert, HPBOYZ, Hooligan Hefs, Manu Crooks, Youngn Lipz and Tones and I, just to name a few.

What can we expect into the future from B.R.B? And for the rest of 2020?

[Txkeout] We have hits on hits waiting in the vault. The only thing is that we want to release them properly, so that they each get the attention they deserve. Good ol’ rona kinda slowed down the process a little bit but rest assured the next ones are gonna be huge, dropping a lot more a lot more often with MVs on the side since school was kind of a write off this year. What’s year 12? PS BIG LOVE to all our fans who have been rocking with us from the start, we ain't made it yet but we're gonna get there soon, we promise.
