What's the rest of 2020 looking like for CAMP 8?

Congratulations on the release of your debut EP 'Everything'! Can you tell us a bit about what inspired the writing and recording of the tracks?

Thank you. I didn’t exactly draw inspiration from the turn of events in the story behind this EP. It just happened naturally that way. It became a process of healing through an ugly breakup with my writing, during which I met my now fiancé. Organically, it turned into a story of closure, with a positive ending.

What prompted the decision to include an extended version of 'Everything' and an alternative version of 'Hurt' in the EP?

For me, the extended version of everything, is the real true version. I wrote the song and intended for it to run for over 6 minutes, but it felt a bit long for the first release. The alternative version of Hurt fits more seamlessly with the EP, It’s more in line with the feel of the EP. And I felt it told the collective rhythm of the story telling better.

We hear you come from quite a creative family! How did that influence the artist we hear and see today?

My family were more encouraging for me to be a musician than anything else. When I was younger I wanted to be a pro football player, which my dad humoured I suppose, but he would always say how much he wanted me to be a musician. My entire childhood was filled with music and instruments and songs. The house that I grew up in has a room specifically for playing music, it's filled with instruments hanging and sitting in every corner. I didn’t really know that wasn’t a standard “thing” for every house until I started going to other friends' homes. So coming from a musical family is… everything to do with me being a musician.

What was it like working with Hayden Calnin on the EP?

It was really relaxed and comfortable, which was important for me, having it being my first solo experience working in a studio with someone. Everything came together really naturally, we were on the same page across it all, Hayden and I have very similar tastes. We get along very well. Hayden has become a good friend to me.

What's the rest of 2020 looking like for CAMP 8?

The next step for CAMP 8 is what I’m constantly thinking about, planning, doing. Now that the EP is finished, it's driving me to the project's next stage. It’s a new space with lots of new ideas being thrown around. It’s a weird year to be doing things in the music scene but it’s kind of fun to work within these boundaries.
